Anime Character Review: Kenshin !

This time, me wanna introduce an anime character. He's Kenshin, and he's the Hitokiri Battousai. The following is ripped from a defunct webbie. Credits to the webbie: The Men of Ruroni Kenshin. Okey, me acknowledge liao, pls dont sue me...me is oni a blogger !?!

Himura Kenshin's birth name is Shinta. When he loses everyone he knows to murderous bandits, Hiko Seijuro takes him into his care, gives him a new name befitting a swordsman and teaches him to fight. His swordsmanship is the Hiten Mitsurugi school, which embraces the philosophy of using the sword without prejudice, to protect and preserve life. Before completing his training, however, Kenshin leaves his sensei. Civil war is raging in Japan. Kenshin becomes an assassin for the Ishin Shishi, earning the nickname Hitokiri Battousai. He slaughters hundreds in the belief he is helping to bring about a new era of peace... and when he realizes what he has truly done, it is too late.

Following the end of the Tokugawa era, in the advent of the Meiji Restoration, Kenshin chooses a lonely path of self-redemption. He carries a "reverse blade" sword and vows never to kill again.

I love Kenshin for what he is—an honest man who wants nothing more than to live a better life, one free of death and strife. He believes he should fight to help preserve the uneasy peace of the Meiji era, and to protect the people he cares about. He would not hesitate to lay his life down for them.

But, it is not until Kenshin returns to Hiko to complete his training that he realizes what it is he lacked to find the quietude his spirit has craved for so long—the will to live. It is not enough that he should be unafraid to die protecting the people he loves. When one fights to die, one fights with nothing at stake... without true purpose. You might even call it a defeatist attitude. Kenshin needs to learn to value his own life as dearly as he does the lives of others. A person who fights with an overwhelming desire to survive the battle—the person whose love for life is greater than his lust for blood or his thirst for vengeance—is the true champion... and ultimately the more powerful swordsman.

It's a bitter-sweet irony for Kenshin. To be the best fighter there is, Kenshin has to fight not only to protect the lives of all who are dear to him, but his own as well. To be selfless, he has to be selfish. To be free, he has to be mindful of his ties and obligations. (My brain is all tied up in knots now. *sweat drop*)
