An email to my leggy friend -- NOT ME !?! 

SUBJECT: NOT MUM ABOUT SEX

Dear Shirley,

Guess what? Last night, the unimaginable happened on the living room couch.

Actually, it wasn't that surprising. It has been hanging palpably between us for a long time, like a ripened fruit ready to fall.

But when it happened, I was still, well, a little surprised.

Not to mention, nervous. After all, it's not everyday that I do this with a much older person.

Yes, I am talking about the three-letter word: SEX.

Or rather, we were. Last night, my mother and I talked about sex.

HA! Caught you there, didn't I?

All right, to make up for pulling your leg, when the real thing happens, you will be the first to know.

My mum was concerned about my affinity for older men.

Remember my last boyfriend, who was eight years older than me? My mother has been afraid that I will pull a Catherine Zeta-Jones/Michael Douglas act ever since.

So, when she found out ( eavesdropping on my phone calls ) that her baby girl is seeing another Mr Forty-Something, she freaked out. Come on, it was just two dinners, one movie and no kissing... well, not the deep-tongue kind anyway.

It's not like I am marrying the guy or something serious. What must I do to make her realise that I am big enough to take care of myself? Pose in my bikini thongs for Maxim?

As you know, she's mistaken.

I have no marked preferences. I love men, any age. It's just that my social circle puts me in contact with the more mature crowd. Simple case of biased sampling population, I told her. She didn't appreciate my humour.

In true maternal fashion, she tried changing my mind by discussing the issue with me and when that failed, she tried to threathen me.

She ominously predicted that by the time I reach my sexual peak, the man would be too busy asking for his bedpan to perform. Oh, the frustration ! She then knowingly expounded the importance of sex. Now it was my turn to freak out.

Here I was, way over my adolescence and earning my own money, having my first family sex education lesson.

How embarrassing. How belated. How surreal. I would love to move out on my own, no more meddling mothers, yippee !

Plus, I can NOT fold my blanket ( what's the point, I am going to use it again ) and stick my fave pop stars anywhere. Best of all, I get to invite Mr Forty-Something up for a nightcap. Wow, doesn't that sound really adult ?

Now, here's the important point. Much as I love to take up your suggestion to be your new housemate, I can't.

I am sorry that our grandiose dreams as swing singles a la friends ( only we look nowhere like Jennifer Aniston and an HDB estate is not downtown Manhatten ) will not materialise after all. Sigh.

I can't afford it. Here are my sums the Master card way. Rent: $600, utilities: $50, transport: $450, essentials: $600 ( food, shampoo, magazines, manicure ). My parents love: Priceless.

I concluded this when my father brought me piping hot char kway teow for supper while I was working out my sums, trying to break up his family.

My only sister is married. If I move out, it will leave two lonely retirees on their own. I was so anxious to grow up, I forgot how it must like to feel old.

Our parents won't be around to bug or nag at us forever. Some things money can't buy; and for everything else, there's always tomorrow.

Independence will come soon enough, so why rush it ?

In the meantime, I am trying to avoid continuing last night's conversation -- that old people have sex lives.

I'd rather die than imagine it. But check with me again when I reach that age.

Me still hate u, yeah U..u made me so worried abt u and hurt me so much in the past yet u aren't the least moved at all after wat me has done so far and u didn't even apologise to me even though " tat incident " was partly yr fault. ME HATE U AND WILL NEVER FORGIVE UUU...Yet though moi animosity for u has subsided a bit..but Me Will Never Forgive UUU...Even so, me actually wanted to accompany u to see doc tomolo to see if yr backpain is alrite buden me is scared of wat disastrous tragedy that could have ensued should things didn't turn out the way me thought would be..aniways, u hve lotsa friends, so losing one insignificant me wouldn't mean anything...

Don't make someone a priority who only makes u an option. -- 2pid re*ina..These were the words that u taught me..me is sure that u obviously treat everyone as options, even if not, at least treat me as an option and patronise me as such...

Long ago, me naively thought that " ACtion may not always bring Happiness but there is no Happiness without Action. " in accordance with Newton's First and Second Law..Though me still believed in it now but me can't help but feel moi faith in this mantra has backslided..Even if me do so much, there are people who can just brush away yr kindness and care as easily as they blow away a four-leaf clover..All the time me has believed u were a person of integrity and a good person, but your actions so far has shown that u are just a sickening poisonous lavender with thorns...Even so, though this may seem hypocritical of me and me is not any paragon of virtues..but me still hope tat u can get yr backpain treated and start caring more for yr family and friends...
