The things we used to say Everything we used to do All the memories lead back to you. I’d adore having them come out and play again for a moment But as for now, I press rewind. I take everything in as is To realize what I’ve lost And what I’ve discovered. I knew this time would come The day I faced authenticity. I've learned so much from you. I guess I’ve learned to grow up on my own But nothing feels like it’s worth living Because nothing only matters when I’m in the midst of you.

Extract from January 18, 2009 - Sunday Newspaper
By 李玮玲医生 of 新加坡国立脑神经医学院院长 / Dr. Lee Wei Ling ( Director of National Neuroscience Institute )
A society that is blind to the suffering of the less fortunate will never be gracious.
As quoted from the Newspapers by Dr. Lee Wei Ling
Line 1: " Let me give you a concrete example closer to home of the consequences of such omission ( Guilty by Omission or If there is something wrong that we know of, I believe we should try to set it right whether it is our business to do so. Not to do so implies we condone the wrong and hence we would be guilty of committing the wrong too. ): A few months ago, a colleague's mother suffered a heart attack and was rushed by ambulance to Tan Tock Seng Hospital at night.
Line 2: Horror of horrors, there was no cardiologist there. My friend desperately called one of several private cardiologists she knew personally, being a doctor herself. But what could a layman have done in similar circumstances? Nothing.
Line 3: Neither Alexandra Hospital nor Tan Tock Seng outside of office hours has the resources to handle acute myocardial infarctions ( AMI ) or heart attacks.
Line 4: Thus, they are not in a position to give patients the best chance of surviving heart attacks. Of those who survived, the chance of impaired function of the heart would be higher than those for patients treated in in hospitals where cardiologists and facilities were available as in the National Heart Centre ( NHC ) or National University Hospital ( NUH ).
Moi' Comments of Line 4:
That's why me feel that education in Singapore should also realise this important point. It is necessary that not just top schools like Raffles Institution, Anglo Chinese School or National University of Singapore be allocated with top teachers and lecturers but the weaker neighbourhood schools like Stamford Primary School or Nanyang Technological University and Singapore Institute of Management ( SIM ) should also have their adequate pool of good teachers and lecturers who can educate the children. After all, A chain is only as strong as its weakest link.
( MOMENTOUS PART )
Line 5: These problems are beyond my areas of responsibility. But I am a doctor; I know what is wrong; and I know what needs to be done. I would have been guilty by omission if I had not tried to solve this problem.
Line 6: So I engaged the ambulances which came under the Singapore Civil Defence Force, NHC, NUH and got them all to agree that when their ambulance pick up patients with AMI, they would bypass Alexandra and Tan Tock Seng and go only to NUH or NHC.
Line 7: I do not believe homo sapiens are necessarily at the top of the evolutionary pyramid. But it is indisputable that we are different from other species in several ways.
... Truncated...
Line 8: Morality may be a hard concept to grasp, but we acquire it fast. A preschooler, for instance, may learn that it is not all right to eat in class because a teacher says so. If the rule is lifted, the child will happily eat in class. But if the same teacher says it is okay to push another student off a chair, the child would hesitate. He will not think: "No, the teacher should not say that."
Moi' Personal Opinion of Line 8: ( Me agree with it ! )
"There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so." - William Shakespeare
and Quoted from Final Fantasy Versus 13
THink about it. When a Baby Child is born in this world, does it know how to differentiate between what is good or bad, right or wrong. THus, Me strongly feel that 思想 is special, 没有分好坏,没有分对错,也没有分男女的。。There are some things that we know that we cannot be strongly influenced but that's only because we have prior experience on how to deal with it..
But even if a Child has its own form of Freedom in Thinking, a Child
1) Doesn't how to protect himself/herself,
2) Doesn't know what he/she does can hurt others or harm the environment,
3) Doesn't know how to get along with others,
4) Doesn't know how to learn or select the best practices,
5) Doesn't know how to rectify his/her own wrongs...
Line 9: In both cases, somebody would have taught the child the rules, but the rule against pushing has a stickiness about it. It resists coming unstuck even if someone in authority countenances its breach. THat is the difference between a moral imperative and mere social convention. Some psychologists like Michael Schulman believe children can innately tell the difference.
Moi' Personal Opinion of Line 9:
Me don't agree with Michael Schulman who believe children can innately tell the difference. Refer to moi' comments on Line 8.
Line 10: Of course, the child might on occasion may hit some other child and won't feel particularly bad about it -- unless of course, he is caught. THe same is true of people who steal or despots who slaughter their people.
Moi' Personal Opinion of Line 10:
Thus it shows that a child should be educated so that a child 除了天生聪明,也要思维开通 but also learn to believe in themselves and hold their stance or "right a wrong" when what they themselves or other people are doing is "wrong".
( MOMENTOUS PART )
Line 11: Marc Hauser, professor of psychology at Harvard University, has written:" MOral judgment is pretty consistent from person to person -- that is, we all know what is right and what is wrong. Moral behaviour, however is scattered all over the chart."
Line 12: The rules we know, even the one we intuit, are by no means the rules we follow. THere are people who have no moral instinct -- psychopaths and antisocial people who commit crimes and seem incapable of being reformed. They stand out precisely because their behaviour is bizarre.
( MOMENTOUS PART )
Line 13: Of the rules that we do follow, it is easier for most people to follow rules that require passively not doing anything wrong. Active doing something right, especially if something that does not fall within our area of responsibility, is uncommon.
Moi' Personal Opinion of Line 13:
Thus it results that people in Singapore behave as if they are in army. They only seek and pray not to do anything wrong, and neither will they bother go doing something right. Because helping someone may sometimes only end up in yourself getting blamed and punished, so some might think that why bother trying to be a hero when you are a fool..And if me behave like most people to follow rules that require passively not doing anything wrong, then this post would not have appeared and more people would continue passively watching in the sidelines and not righting a wrong. This is not to say that me is holier-than-thou and will right every wrong that me see as me also have many flaws but its a very small but important stepping point towards making Big Progress in the Future.
Line 14: It is good for any country to have an active citizenry. And that is precisely why the concept of "guilt by omission" should be a part of our ethos.
Moi' Personal Opinion of Line 14:
A "guilt by omission" ethos where people are forced to abide by it will only result in " MOral judgment is pretty consistent from person to person -- that is, we all know what is right and what is wrong. Moral behaviour, however is scattered all over the chart." but it is still necessary to push it a bit further with educating and demonstrating why it is important. THus it is necessary that children should be educated from young and not just be punished without understanding why they are punished and eventually be made to understand clearly why doing wrong is wrong, righting a wrong is right, wronging a right is wrong and doing right is right.
Line 15: As Singapore climbs the economic ladder, its need for people who would feel guilty if they omitted to do something right -- not merely doing passively do no wrong -- will increase.
Line 16: A rich middle-class society encircled by the material pleasures of life, happily oblivious of social inequities and the suffering of the less fortunate among us, will never become a civil or gracious society.
( Momentous Part )
Line 17: On the other hand, a country with little financial reserves, a middle class that is not wealthy but is socially active, that tries to lift the lowest common denominator, is one that would be heading in the right direction.
Line 18: Some things cannot be legislated but must come spontaneously from the heart. The desires to right wrongs and help others are examples.
Line 19: Singapore is a great place for social experiments to improve both the country and the individual.
After reading the article by Dr. Lee Wei Ling, most of the points that she pointed out, 我也深有同感 !?!
